Home Assistant is the gold standard for private home automation. Written in Python, it integrates with over 2,000 different smart brands, letting you control your lights, switches, thermostats, cameras, and media players from a single secure local dashboard.
Why Host Home Assistant?
- Local Control & Privacy: Your smart home should belong to you. Home Assistant processes your automations and device communications locally inside your home, rather than routing your life through external proprietary cloud servers!
- Incredible Automation Engine: Build highly sophisticated, custom automation logic based on triggers like time, sunrise/sunset, GPS coordinates, temperature, motion, or custom inputs.
- Complete Open Source Freedom: Free from vendor lock-in. Mix and match Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth devices from any brand effortlessly!
Getting Started
While Home Assistant core can be hosted on a cloud VM, it is most commonly installed locally on a Raspberry Pi, dedicated NUC, or Proxmox container inside your home network to access physical radio antennas (like Zigbee or Z-Wave USB coordinators)!
